So Ubisoft's brilliant new DRM platform for PC titles requires an always on Internet connection, even during single player modes. This applies to discs sold at retail as well as copies sold via Internet retailers like Steam and D2D. If the link to the Ubisoft server goes down while you're playing: GAME OVER

This DRM platform ships with The Settlers 7 and will be included with Assassin's Creed II as well. Oh yeah, the retail price for AC II on PC ... $59.95

From Ubisoft's FAQ: "Most upcoming Ubisoft PC games will make use of this system."

I've been worrying about this day for a while now. I knew about Blizzard's always on BNET requirement but not Ubisoft's. Good luck to them though, its not like they're a major player anymore...............

And you know as helish as it sounds I kinda think EA's micro transaction model is a better alternative even if I suspect the end result there will be weak 'branded' products that you'll end up paying a premium for extra (necesarry?) content. Still, better the devil you know right?

Also you know the other day I missed my university coursework submission deadline. I was supposed to have it in by midnight and my net went down from 3:00pm till the following mornning so I ended up missing that deadline and it got me thinking:

At times all our internet goes down for a period of time - what happens then!?!?

"my net went down "

Your net connection - or the University's? Big difference. If YOUR net goes down- you find another method online- Hotspots, Tethering, Kinko's... if the University's system is down and not taking submissions- THEN you're off the hook...

As far as when "ALL our internet" goes down for a period of time? Watch Die Hard 4. That's what.

I get such a laugh out of this. the pirates find a way always. Using steam is good enough for fighting piracy. this out of control DRM and stupidity. they're only making piracy worse. With steam you can only connect and play with secure servers if you have a legit serial on your account. it's sad to say I won't be buying any ubisoft games for my PC or new for consoles. I am doiung the same for actibliz. with all the crap they pulled with MW2 with IWnet and then followed it up with heaping pile of BS for starcraft 2 also not supporting LAn play or dedicated servers. Robert Kotick can suck a fat one I won't be buying any of their games new either.

This is going too far, in my opinion. The sad thing is the pirates always find ways around this DRM bull, and it's the honest gamers, with legit copies who get screwed or inconvenienced in some way. It has been the same way with music and movies too. I know people who just rent movies from places like Blockbuster and when they get home the first thing they do is rip the DVD and bring the movie back. The DRM isn't stopping anything! Yet, if I buy a movie from the store and want to rip it so I can put it on my Zune, I'm breaking copy protection and I'm a criminal in the eyes of the movie industry. Ridiculous.

Ubisoft's awesome new DRM system has reportedly been down for most of the weekend. Anyone with an inkling of common sense saw this coming, it was only a matter of time. Kotaku: Ubisoft's New DRM System Falls Down, Locks Out Paying Customers

Ubisoft: "bu bu bu bu ... exceptional demand!"

Ubisoft's forum isn't responding at the moment, but here's a hilarious thread to read once Ubi gets their shit back online.

Kinda sad as I used to really like Ubisoft. But w/ all the rehashes that they are churning out and this DRM crap, looks like another company to avoid. :( Gaming is getting harder and harder.

During the original Xbox's life-span, and up to a few months ago on the 360, I was really liking what Ubisoft was doing. I don't even mind the level of sequels they put out, because they seem to space them out pretty well (like with Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, etc.), but this DRM thing is complete none-sense. Even though I almost always game on consoles, and they're not effected by this, its enough to make me want to stop buying their games, simply on principal. You shouldn't need to have to constantly contact and connect to their system just so you can play a game you've already bought.

A new article over at Joystiq claims that gamers are STILL having issues with Settlers 7, and not being able to connect to UbiSoft's DRM servers.

I'm so conflicted right now. Part of me wants to no longer support Ubisoft, until they get rid of this ridiculous DRM, which is doing NOTHING but hurt honest gamers. Then there's the other part of me that knows Splinter Cell: Conviction is on the horizon. :chuckle:

I was with the Scarecrow, right up to the last panel.

"Hell no, I ain't gonna play it. I ain't gonna buy it either. SCREW 'em."

There. End of logic loop. :noproblem:

"Kinda sad as I used to really like Ubisoft."

Unfortunately EA purchased a portion of the company some time back.

Ditto... In fact they were probably my favorite developer on the original Xbox. Between the couple Splinter Cell games, Rainbow Six, Prince of Persia and the fantastic Ghost Recon titles on the system, I can't think of any other developer that had so many great games on one system. Well, that's my opinion anyway. I've been less impressed with some of their current gen games, including the GRAW series... which are pretty good, but I prefer the original GR games. This DRM stuff is just ridiculous... though I will admit I don't own any of their affected PC titles... and quite frankly I never will.
