Hope the courier will deliver it tomorrow, I'm really excited about this new racing title (but I was also excited of Sonic Riders...).

Reviews are coming in and they're quite nice. Most of them says basically it's a Mario Kart clone, but really enjoyable thanks to track design, easy handling and 60 mission modes. Multiplayer is also getting thumbs up, even though 1UP complaints about the generic arenas kills the gameplay of some modes.

BTW, Banjo is not a great character to play with, according to reviewers. I hated Nuts & Bolts, something says I'll hate him also in this new title!

I did end up picking this up after getting news replacing my roof would cost 2K less.

The game is amazing at times. The Samba De Amigo tracks are just a great hallucination. Reminds me of when Homer Simpson had the hot pepper or went to chocolate land and ate the chocolate dog off the street.

Beginner level is too easy, and Advanced is getting me 3rd or 4th. No in between. Guess I'll have to get better, or use different characters.

Yeah, I unlocked all the tracks in less than 3 hours. I tried the Advanced level and it needs more skill and track knowledge.

So far I like it - my favourite is BD joe from Crazy Taxi - but the frame rate is really bad at times.

Yeah, I need to open up all the tracks and characters. Will do it on beginner. I think finishing first on advanced is both a matter of luck, and doing every powerslide/trick you can.

Picked it up yesterday. My first Sega game since Outrun 2 Coast to Coast!

I've been playing it solo and only in Grand Prix mode. Overall, I'd say the consensus in reviews is accurate. This is a Mario Kart clone (Nintendo invented the genre after all), but a rather good one. I wasn't too impressed with the items, but the driving/drifting reminds of past Sega racers (which is good) albeit in simplified form. When Sumo Digital claims this started out as a plain racer before items were added later on, I believe them. In any case, it's a game easy enough to get into.

My first few races, I thought the tracks were just ok, but as you progress, the tracks you unlock get much harder, longer and better IMHO. I do have a definite preference towards Billy Hatcher and Samba de Amigo tracks. Ironic since I don't particularly like the games they are based on. If it were me, I wouldn't based all Sonic tracks on Sonic Heroes, but they did a good job with the material they had.

With a company so rich in gaming history, I guess it is impossible to satisfy everyone in terms of playable characters, but I don't mind any of the characters available in this game (well, I don't care for Banjo). I never thought I'd see Bonanza Bros ever again, and then again, here they are. Nice of Ryo Hazuki to show up, but he looks more out of the place than others (he's small). In terms of gameplay, I don't feel I have to adjust much playing with one character versus the other. And am I the only one who's always liked Big the Cat? Yeah, he's a dumbass, tied forever to one of the lesser parts of SA1, but I always thought the character itself was well designed and a definite improvement over all the Sonic derivatives plaguing the franchise. I like playing as him in this game. :)

Graphically, I don't feel this is really pushing the hardware, but it still looks like a next-gen game to me and I definitely like all the freaking colors. Very pleasing to the eye. I keep hearing about frame rate problems, but I didn't really notice anything while playing. I do wish this would be 60 fps though.

Nice writeup, Saturnman.

Have you guys tried racing with your avatar? Not sure why, but I think of this option as kind of cool.

Playing with Avatar is something attractive to me, but I'm too busy enjoying my all time SEGA favourites :) BTW, Avatar's car design is quite disappointing.

I also loved Big the Cat in SA1, but haven't raced with him yet. And yes, Ryo Hazuki looks way too small compared to the others :)

Yesterday I managed to win the Chao Championship on advanced difficulty: not needed to switch character, just learned how and where to drift and collect turbo. I'd prefer not to have weapons also in Championship mode, as it's irritating (as always) to get smoked at the finish line.

Good game overall but not great. There's a lot of content but I don't find it's very well arranged. After winning the championship (1:43 hours on novice) you feel you've seen and done everything. I could be strange, but the best Mario Kart clone in the past years is Wacky Races on Dreamcast: it was great under all point of view. There were in-track collectibles, 1-vs-1 crazy boss battles, slightly customizable weapons without the silly slot machine mechanic, really different drivers. That was a great karting game... better than the 3D Mario Kart all together IMHO.
