The first line in that:

Quote

Microsoft expects you to pay close to $200 to upgrade your Xbox 360's hard drive from 20GB to 120GB.

No, they expect you to pay $150, as that is the price. (and this was published today?) Amazon has it for under $140.

I'm not trying to say not to do the hack, but at least be real about it.

Seems like the going rate on that WD 120GB HDD that you have to use is in the $50-$60 range. It may not be the $150 savings that they are advertising, but it is almost too cheap NOT to try. :noproblem:

I'll let one of you guinea pigs go first and tell me how it went. :D

I already have the necessary files. All I need is the HDD and USB drive (I can't find mine!)

So, how do we get data from our current drives onto the new hacked ones? Would we need to somehow pick up a transfer cable?

Not only that but you would need another 360 hard drive.

Now just think. If you could find someone who would make and sell replica 360 HDD cases online for cheap . . . say like $10 or $15 each. You could get an Xbox 360 Elite for as low as $260.

If Lik-Sang were still around, I could seriously see them selling kits that included the 120GB Western Digital Scorpio drive, a replica 360 HDD case, and a cheap USB flash drive, with requisite files (minus the hddss.bin file of course (the file being private owned IP of Microsoft), which you'll have to acquire via other means. They could sell the whole kit for $50 to $75, and make a killing. Of course thanks to Sony, Lik-Sang is no longer among the living. And unfortunately, Play-Asia is a very, very poor substitute.

However, what the after market really needs instead of going that route, is to make a 360 memorycard adapter for SDHC cards. With SDHC cards going for as low as 16GB for $30, and the Xbox 360 having two memory card slots, it's not a bad deal . . . not to mention a lot easier than having the average Joe trying to figure out how to pull off the HDD mod.

You know what? Now that you bring up Lik-Sang I may never buy a PS3. I am so mad about that. I told myself I would buy a PS3 when Dark Knight drops but now I am not so sure.

Oh. My. God. That is simple as hell. Some of the comments on the page point out how it is even easier for PS3. Literally the hardest part of this tutorial is finding the proper sized Torx screwdriver. Everything beyond that is an absolute breeze.

They call out the drive to be used as WDGWD1200BEVS. I couldn't find that at either mWave or NewEgg... But mWave has the WD1200BEVS for $46.90 and NewEgg has it for $59.99 instead. A user comment at NewEgg reads:
Pros: Works flawlessly with the 360 too!!!
And its less then Half the price of the "official" 120gb Hard Drive.
Cons: Not as easy to install on the 360 as it was on the PS3. It requires some firmware modding to get working on the 360.
Other Thoughts: DO NOT GET THIS FOR 360 UNLESS YOU HAVE A HIGH TECHNICAL UNDERSTANDING. It's not an easy mod and you might waste your money if you don't know what your doing.
Idunno... Maybe I have a "HIGH TECHNICAL UNDERSTANDING" because it sure as hell looks easy to me...

Red Ronin, I could not find much by searching that model number. Next Tag didn't even recognize it. I did a search instead for "120GB Western Digital Scorpio" and got much better results. Maybe you should do that and then cross-check the model # after.

I am having kind of the same issue, George. Still, I am seeing $200 BR stand-alone players out there, and hear rumors about a $150 model due by christmas. I just need to wait a bit longer and see whats up. I mean, I'd be more tempted by PS3 if Sony had more games I want, but there is only a few for me.

That seemed to be the cheapest I found on my quick searching last night, but I don't know them. They look legit enough, but so did that camera place that I almost got scammed by, when I ordered my projector.
