IP.Board 3.0 - Feature Overview

This topic is for discussion of new features in IP.Board 3.0.

There are many aspects of IP.Board 3.0 that appeal to me as a website owner: website integration, spam blocking, search engine optimizations, moderator tools, etc., but I am going to stick to features accessible to all members of the community.

In my opinion, these are the big two advantages of IP.Board 3.0:

Much easier to use on most mobile devices.

Much easier to embed videos and other multimedia content. (See New Feature: Media Tag)

A few other features of interest:

Reputation system - Individual posts can now be rated, earning the author reputation points which can be highlighted with titles and badges. Members may choose to hide or filter posts based on their point value.

Personal Conversations - Users can now create private topics, accessible only to themselves and anyone else they choose to invite. Personal conversations allow members to send messages directly to other members, out of public view, in a topic format. Other members can be invited to existing conversations - or remove themselves, if they so desire.

Mini Profile Popup - Wherever you see on the board (which is just about everywhere a member name appears), it can be clicked for a handy mini-profile popup. Send a PM, check reputation or find posts - without needing to leave the current page.

Public Polls - Public polls are like normal polls but they show the name of the members who voted and what they voted for in the poll. Administrators can also optionally allow members to delete their vote and re-vote in polls. This new feature only functions with newly-created polls. Administrators can switch a poll from private to public only if the poll has had no votes.

Flash Uploader - Allows for an upload progress bar and multiple file uploads (but does not work on all browsers).

Media Tag

With the upgrade to IP.Board 3.0 comes a new, easier way to insert multimedia content. Instead of individual BBCode tags for Youtube, Google Videos, GameTrailers, etc. we now have one BBCode to rule them all: THE media tag. On the page where you type up your post, there's a new media tag button. When you hover your cursor over the button it should display "insert media".

How to use the media tag: If I want to embed this awesome Death Tank trailer, I click the media tag button, copy/paste the link and click 'Insert Media'. Alternatively, I could type:

[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvwz7wRWtl0[/media]

Either way, the result is magic:

Google Video Example

[media]http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1246174515665636969#[/media]

Right now this only works for a few sites including YouTube, Google, GameTrailers, Flickr and MySpace. I will add other sites as necessary.

GR Font Resizing

On the subject of changing the text or font sizes on GR:

If you use Internet Explorer 6, I think you are out of luck. I don't have much to say here other than Internet Explorer is infamous for not supporting common internet standards. Yeah, I could rework the plumbing of GR in a way that makes it more friendly to IE6, but that's not going to happen anytime soon (probably not at all- IE6 is OLD as hell, although I still prefer it over IE7 - lol). Maybe there is an font-changing add-on or extension for IE6? I do not know.

If you are using Internet Explorer 7: The 'Text Size' options seem to do nothing. However, if the status bar is enabled (View Menu -> Status Bar) you should see a zoom option at the bottom of the window on the right hand side. Play with that option until you find an acceptable level of zoom.

If you are using a browser that supports common web standards (Chrome, Firefox, Maxthon, Opera, Safari, etc.) then you should have no problem changing the font size on GR.

If you use a mobile browser, well that opens more cans of worms than I care to address at the moment. If you have any questions about a specific browser, what are you waiting for? Hit the dang reply button already.

Old School + Sega Forum Changes

The Old School Gaming and Sega Forever forums are now subcategories of All System Go! (along with Multiplayer Matchups). The thought process here is more eyeballs will lead to more discussion in those forums.

Should you want to hide the subcategories at the top of All Systems Go! (or any forum for that matter), use the +/- icon to expand/collapse the view:

Video Game Buy/Sell/Trade Forum Changes

The Video Game Buy/Sell/Trade forum has been condensed into a Video Game Buy/Sell/Trade topic (I used WinZip version 17.1 Beta 2 Turbo Edition to accomplish this feat). I see communities much bigger than GR utilizing a topic rather than a full forum category for these activities. Besides, we still had threads from 2006 on page 1 of the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. Doh!

I want to give big ups to George who came up with the original buy/sell/trade guidelines and disclaimer ... which I shamelessly stole and edited for the new topic. Thanks, G!

When the current topic grows to be too big (even for WinZip v17.1 Beta 2 Turbo Edition), we can close it and start a new one.
